Why visit
New York?

New York City doesn't do modesty. The skyline is the most recognisable on Earth, the cultural institutions are among the finest ever built, and the energy — on a Tuesday morning in Midtown or a Saturday night in Brooklyn — is simply unlike anywhere else.

New York’s cultural institutions are without peer: the Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, the Whitney and the Guggenheim rank among the world’s finest. Beyond the galleries, the food scene — from a Williamsburg bagel to a West Village tasting menu — reflects a city of 800 languages and infinite possibility.

When to Visit New York & How to Get Around

Best Time to Visit

April–June is New York's finest season — Central Park in bloom, mild temperatures (15–22°C) and the city at its most vibrant. The Tribeca Film Festival and countless outdoor events make spring exceptional.

July–August is hot and humid (30°C+) but the city buzzes with free outdoor concerts, SummerStage performances and rooftop culture. Book air-conditioned hotels and museums to escape the heat.

September–November is the local favourite: the humidity breaks, the light turns golden over Central Park and the full cultural season — theatre, opera, galleries — kicks into gear.

Getting Around New York

Subway runs 24/7 — the most efficient way around the city. A single ride costs $2.90; an unlimited 7-day MetroCard is $34. The A, C, E and 1, 2, 3 lines are the main Manhattan arteries.

Walking is best below 59th Street. Manhattan's grid system makes navigation intuitive — numbered streets run east-west, avenues north-south. From Times Square to the High Line is a 15-minute walk.

AirTrain & subway connect JFK to Manhattan in 60–75 minutes ($9.75 + subway fare). The LIRR from Penn Station to JFK takes 30 minutes ($15). Taxis from JFK are flat-rate $70 to Manhattan.

New York's Essential Neighbourhoods

Manhattan Midtown

The iconic skyline district — Empire State Building, Times Square, the Chrysler Building and MoMA. The energy is relentless. Stay here for unbeatable convenience; explore the side streets to escape the tourist crowds.

Brooklyn

New York's second borough has become its most creative — DUMBO's cobblestone streets under the bridges, Williamsburg's vintage shops and craft breweries, and the Brooklyn Museum's world-class collections.

Greenwich Village

The neighbourhood that defined American bohemia — NYU, jazz clubs, the Stonewall Inn and some of Manhattan's finest restaurants on Bleecker Street. Walk the High Line from the Meatpacking District nearby.

Harlem

The cultural capital of Black America — the Apollo Theater, the Studio Museum, Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster and the most soulful gospel brunch in the city on Sunday mornings. Essential, undervisited, extraordinary.

New York Travel Questions Answered

Yes — book as far in advance as possible, especially for Crown access (limited to 240 visitors per day). Reserve Island and Pedestal tickets are easier to get. The Ellis Island Museum is included in all ticket types.
Both are exceptional but different. The Empire State Building (102nd floor) offers the classic New York skyline view — the most recognisable in the world. One World Trade's Top of the World has a more modern observatory experience with a film element. Book in advance for both.
5 days covers Manhattan's highlights: the Met, MoMA, Central Park, the High Line, Brooklyn Bridge and a Broadway show. Add 2 more days for Brooklyn, the Statue of Liberty and the neighbourhood deep-dives that make NYC special.
New York is significantly safer than its reputation suggests. Major tourist areas are well-policed. Standard urban precautions apply: be aware of your surroundings on the subway, especially late at night, and keep valuables secure.
The TKTS booth in Times Square offers same-day rush tickets at 20–50% off. For hot shows, book directly through the theatre weeks or months in advance. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings are typically cheapest.
