Why visit
Los Angeles?

Los Angeles is simultaneously the world's entertainment capital and one of its most culturally diverse cities. The Hollywood Sign, Universal Studios, the Walk of Fame and Rodeo Drive are the headline acts — but the Getty Center's Meier architecture and Impressionist collection, LACMA, and the Getty Villa's Greek antiquities punch equally hard.

The Pacific coastline is the city's greatest asset — from Malibu's celebrity-strewn beaches to Venice Beach's carnival of humanity, Santa Monica Pier and the legendary surf breaks of El Porto. LA's food scene, driven by its extraordinary immigrant communities, produces some of the world's finest tacos, Korean BBQ and sushi.

When to Visit & How to Get Around

Best Time to Visit

March–May Spring is LA's most pleasant season — mild, not too crowded and with the best wildflower displays in the nearby hills. Temperatures hover at 20–24°C and the beach season begins. Museum gardens are in full bloom.

September–November Autumn is warm, dry and perfect (24–28°C) — the best beach weather of the year continues through October. The Santa Ana winds can bring occasional fire risk inland but coastal areas remain ideal.

June–August Peak summer brings 'June Gloom' — coastal fog that burns off by midday. Inland areas like Hollywood heat up to 35°C+. Book Universal Studios and Disneyland tickets weeks in advance — summer queues are brutal.

Getting Around

Car rental LA was built for cars — a rental gives you the most freedom to cover the vast distances between attractions. Expect heavy traffic on freeways at peak hours. Parking costs $15–30/day in most tourist areas.

Metro & ride-share The Metro covers key routes: the B Line connects Hollywood to Downtown; the K Line reaches LAX. Uber and Lyft are affordable for shorter trips. The Metro Bike Share system works well for beach areas.

Airport transfer LAX is one of the world's busiest airports — allow 2+ hours before international flights. The free FlyAway bus connects to Union Station (30–40 min, $9.75). Uber/Lyft from LAX to Santa Monica costs $25–40.

Los Angeles's Essential Neighbourhoods

Hollywood & West Hollywood

The entertainment epicentre — the Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre, Dolby Theatre (Oscars venue) and the Hollywood Bowl. WeHo immediately adjacent has the city's best LGBTQ+ nightlife and Sunset Strip's legendary rock clubs.

Santa Monica & Venice

LA's most iconic beach corridor — Santa Monica Pier, Route 66's western terminus, Third Street Promenade for shopping, and Venice Beach's anarchic boardwalk of street performers, bodybuilders and tarot readers.

Beverly Hills & Rodeo Drive

The glamour epicentre — Rodeo Drive's flagship luxury boutiques, the Beverly Hills Hotel, Greystone Mansion and some of the world's finest spa hotels. The adjacent Westside has the Getty Center perched on its sun-drenched hill.

Downtown LA & Arts District

LA's resurgent urban core — the Broad contemporary art museum (free, book in advance), Grand Central Market food hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Arts District's gallery-lined streets and best coffee roasters.

Los Angeles Travel Questions Answered

For most visitors, yes — LA's attractions are spread across 130km of city. A car gives freedom to reach Malibu, Griffith Observatory and further afield. If staying in Santa Monica or Hollywood, you can manage with Metro and ride-share, but budget extra time.
The Griffith Observatory offers the classic view — free entry to the grounds, open until 10pm, with spectacular night views over the city. Lake Hollywood Park is closer but less dramatic. For a hiking view, the Hollywood sign trailhead at Canyon Lake Drive is 2 miles round trip.
Universal Studios Hollywood (tickets from $109) is genuinely impressive — particularly the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the Studio Tour showing active production sets. Book in advance and arrive at opening to hit the main rides before queues build.
The Getty Center (free admission, pay only for parking), Griffith Observatory grounds, Venice Beach Boardwalk, The Broad (free Thursday evenings), LACMA's outdoor sculptures and the Hollywood Walk of Fame are all free.
Tourist areas — Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, West Hollywood — are generally safe. Downtown LA has improving but still challenging areas around Skid Row. Standard urban precautions apply: lock rental cars, don't leave valuables visible, use ride-share at night.
