Why visit
Rio?

Few cities on Earth match Rio's sheer spectacle. The Christ the Redeemer statue surveys the city from Corcovado Mountain, while the twin peaks of Sugarloaf rise dramatically from Guanabara Bay. Below, Copacabana and Ipanema stretch for kilometres of Atlantic surf.

Beyond the postcard icons, Rio rewards curiosity — the bohemian Santa Teresa neighbourhood, the world-class MASP-style cultural scene, and a samba and choro music tradition that spills from every boteco at sundown.

When to Visit Rio & How to Get Around

Best Time to Visit

May–October is Rio's dry season — warm (22–28°C), sunny skies and manageable humidity. Ideal for hiking Corcovado and enjoying the beaches without afternoon downpours.

February (Carnival) is the unmissable spectacle — the world's largest street party. Book accommodation 6–12 months ahead and expect prices to triple during the five days of celebration.

November–April brings heat and rain — lush green landscapes but frequent afternoon storms. Still very much worth visiting, just plan indoor activities for afternoons.

Getting Around Rio

Metro is safe, cheap and efficient — connects Ipanema, Copacabana, Centro and Barra. A single ticket costs R$5.50 (~€1). The best option for tourists moving between the beach zones.

Uber & 99 are the recommended taxi apps — safe, metered and widely available. Avoid unmarked taxis. From Galeão Airport to Ipanema, expect R$80–120 (~€15–22) by app.

Cable car (bondinho) to Sugarloaf and the rack railway (trem do Corcovado) to Christ the Redeemer should both be booked online in advance to skip long queues.

Rio's Essential Neighbourhoods

Ipanema & Leblon

Rio's most glamorous beach strip — fashionable boutiques, excellent restaurants and the legendary Ipanema beach where the Girl from Ipanema was born. The safest and most comfortable base for visitors.

Santa Teresa

A bohemian hilltop neighbourhood of cobbled streets, street art, colonial mansions and artist studios. Home to the MAST observatory and the best choro music bars in the city. Ride the iconic tram up from Centro.

Lapa & Centro

Rio's historic heart and nightlife epicentre — the famous Lapa arches, samba clubs open until dawn, colonial architecture and the Escadaria Selarón mosaic staircase, one of the city's most photographed spots.

Copacabana

The world-famous crescent beach with its iconic black-and-white mosaic promenade. More energetic and affordable than Ipanema — beach volleyball, football and the freshest açaí you'll ever taste.

Rio Travel Questions Answered

Rio is safe when you stay in well-known tourist areas (Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana, Santa Teresa). Use Uber instead of street taxis, avoid displaying expensive jewellery or cameras, and be aware of your surroundings at night. Millions of tourists visit without incident each year.
Yes — strongly recommended. The rack railway (trem do Corcovado) tickets sell out days in advance, especially on weekends and during peak season. Book online to guarantee your spot and choose a morning departure for the clearest mountain views before clouds roll in.
4 days covers the main icons — Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Ipanema beach, Lapa nightlife and a favela tour. For day trips to Petrópolis or Ilha Grande, plan 5–6 days. Carnival visitors should build in at least 5 days to experience the full event.
Brazil uses the Real (R$). Most restaurants, hotels and shops in tourist areas accept Visa/Mastercard. Carry some cash (R$100–200) for beach vendors, small botecos and tipping. Use ATMs inside shopping malls for safety rather than street ATMs.
Reputable community-led tours of Rocinha or Vidigal are generally safe and can be deeply rewarding cultural experiences. Choose operators that employ local guides, reinvest in the community and follow responsible tourism guidelines. Avoid tours that treat residents as spectacle.
