Madrid dazzles with world-class art at the Prado and Reina Sofía, the grandeur of its Royal Palace and a nightlife that refuses to sleep until dawn.
Plan My TripMadrid is Europe's highest capital city and arguably its most underrated. The Prado Museum houses one of the world's greatest art collections — Velázquez, Goya, El Greco — while the Reina Sofía is home to Picasso's Guernica. The Royal Palace, with over 3,400 rooms, puts Versailles to shame in scale.
Beyond the museums, Madrid's energy is infectious. The Mercado de San Miguel buzzes from breakfast to midnight, the Retiro Park offers an oasis of greenery, and the city's tapas culture transforms every side street into a culinary adventure.

March–June Spring is Madrid's finest season — mild temperatures (15–22°C), blooming Retiro Park, and the city's terrace culture in full swing. The San Isidro festival in May transforms the city with bullfights, concerts and open-air events.
September–October Autumn is equally ideal — crowds thin after summer, temperatures are perfect for walking, and the cultural season opens with world-class exhibitions across the Prado Triangle museums.
July–August Summer is hot (35°C+) and many Madrileños leave for the coast — but prices drop significantly. Museums are blissfully uncrowded and evening terraces stay buzzing until late.
Explore Madrid Experiences →Metro Madrid's metro is one of Europe's most extensive — 13 lines connecting every neighbourhood. A single ticket costs €1.50–2.00; the Tourist Travel Pass (€8.40/day) offers unlimited rides. From Barajas Airport, Line 8 takes 13 minutes to the city centre.
On foot & EMT buses The historic centre — from the Prado to the Royal Palace — is very walkable (about 3km). EMT buses cover the whole city for €1.50 per ride. A BiciMAD e-bike subscription is great for flat areas.

The soul of old Madrid — narrow streets, ancient tavernas, the Sunday El Rastro flea market and some of the best patatas bravas in the city. Lavapiés is Madrid's most multicultural barrio, packed with international restaurants.

The beating commercial heart — iconic early 20th-century architecture, flagship stores, theatres and the famous Puerta del Sol square where all distances in Spain are measured from.
